peas-in-a-pod
Children’s hands-on educational workshops at the farm
Peas-In-A-Pod is ALMA Backyard Farms’ youth education and development program, using the urban farm as a place for children and families to learn, connect, belong, and grow.
Through farming, cooking, art, nature exploration, and shared experiences, young people develop relationships with the land, with one another, and with their community.
Our goal goes beyond teaching children where food comes from. We want young people to see themselves as part of the fabric of the urban farm — as people who can care for it, contribute to it, return to it, and eventually lead within it.
At a time of increasing loneliness and social disconnection, ALMA sees the neighborhood farm as a powerful place for creating meaningful, repeated connection among children, families, educators, and community.
family weekends
Peas-In-A-Pod Family Weekends are recurring intergenerational experiences designed to help children and their families build a relationship with ALMA’s urban farms.
Families gather once a month on Sundays during an ALMA Farm Stand in Compton or San Pedro, creating a natural connection between youth education, fresh food, neighborhood gathering, and the larger life of the farm.
Children participate alongside parents, grandparents, and caregivers in small-group farming, cooking, art, nature exploration, and culturally rooted experiences.

Summer FARM camp
Summer at ALMA looks like this.
Kids harvesting what they eat.
